Tunisch crochet

I notice that I'm too busy with too much things at the same time. (so today only a post in english becasuse I have to go!) And in the last week it's killing my energy level, and therefore my mood. I'm tired and moody at home, crash on the couch and do nothing (not even to blog or read yours!!). So I'm definitely going to do completly nothing this weekend!! Only time for me! Clear out the busy head.. And me-time is also a bit crochting! Finishing the new earwarmers, the knitted blanket and start new projects. I have so much ideas in my head. And I do think that, that's bugging me too. To much ideas but no time to do something with it.

Like this.. I came across a thriftstore this week, walked in and found a really old crochet book. Including a guide to learn tunisch crochet. I have a tunisch crochet needle from my grandmother (a tunisch needle is a long crochet needle with a knot on the end, as on a knitting needle because you keep the loops on the needle) so I tried it. Really weird because it's the same, and completly different as with normal crochet. I love the effect. I think it's a bit of a combination between weaving and knitting.
Here I tried two different stitches. As you can see, the white one is more like weaving and the top one, is just like knitting.

Wrap it up!

I don't know why these pictures of my wrap scarfs turn out so bad. My head is so white that it appears like I'm almost dead and other colors aren't quit as good as I want them to be. But anyhow, I finished another wrap scarf in grey. They are triangular shaped, and from the middle until the point is 70 cm and the width is about 160 cm. Which makes it pretty width, so good to wrap around you but not to long, so you don't have a whole, big drag behind you. I have one in orange, one in grey (in the shop)and one in blue. But I kept the last one myself, so a new blue one is in progress!
But after I finish the new earwarmers. I'm almost up to prepare a third one. If I have prepared four, I'll finish them all and they will be headed to the shop too!


Ik weet niet waarom die foto's van die wrap sjalen telkens zo slecht zijn. Mijn hoofd is zo wit dat het lijkt alsof ik al bijna dood ben en ook de andere kleuren zijn niet zo goed, als ik wil dat ze zijn. Maargoed, ik heb nog een wrap sjaal af in het donker grijs. Ze zijn dus driehoekig, en vanuit het midden tot het onderste puntje, ongeveer 70 cm en de breedte is ongeveer 160 cm. Wat hem dus aardig breed maakt, en dus breed genoeg om lekker om je heen te slaan maar niet zo lang dat je een halve sleep achter je aan hebt. Ik heb er eentje in oranje, eentje in het grijs dus (beide in de shop) en eentje in het blauw. Maar ik heb de laatste zelf gehouden, dus een nieuwe blauwe komt eraan!
Maar pas nadat ik klaar ben met nieuwe oorwarmers. Ik ben bijna klaar met het voorbereidende werk van een derde paar. En als ik de vierde voorbereid heb, dan ga ik ze allemaal in elkaar zetten en gaan die ook de shop in!

Memory Lane

My mom cleared the attic and brought me, this weekend, my old schoolstuff but also my dolls, barbies (I was a real doll child) and all the clothes. I do think I have this handwork creativity from my mom and grandmothers. The knitted, crocheted and sew all my dolls clothes.
And please, to all you moms!!! Knit, crochet and sew all your child's doll stuff. Really it's so much worth!! And then, when your is, let's say 32, and she unpacks everything, she's again like a child. All memories come back!! Nostalgic memories and fragrances. (and about the smell.. I didn't took the doll into my bed but I couldn't stop smelling her... she smells the same as 25 years ago!!)


Mijn moeder heeft de zolder opgeruimd en bracht me, het weekend, al mijn oude schoolspullen maar ook mijn poppen, barbies (ik was echt een poppen meisje) en al de kleertjes. Ik weet nu zeker dat ik het handwerken van mijn moeder en oma's heb. Zij breiden, haakten en naaiden alle kleren voor mijn poppen.
En alsjeblieft, echt waar, voor alle mama's!! Brei, haal en naai alle kleertjes en dingetjes voor de poppen van je kinderen. echt, het is zoveel waard!! En dan als je, nou laten we zeggen, 32 bent en je kind pakt alles uit, ziet alles weer terug dan is ze weer dat kind. Alle herinnneringen die terugkomen!! Nostalgische herinneringen en geuren. (en wat betreft de geuren.. ik heb de poppen nog net niet mee mijn bed ingenomen maar ik kon niet stoppen om aan ze te ruiken.. ze ruikt gewoon nog hetzelfde als 25 jaar terug!!)

Things, dotts and movies

I got these big, wooden beads from my friend. I think I'm going to crochet them and make a necklace from it. But later.. I have enough projects at the moment!
Ik heb deze grote, houden kralen van een vriendin gekregen. Ik denk dat ik erom heen ga haken en dat ik er een grote ketting van maak. Maar later.. Nu heb ik nog meer dan genoeg andere projecten waar ik mee bezig ben! De oorwarmers zijn in de maak hoor!


I love red, with white polka dots. I saw this bag and didn't want it. I needed it! And then I saw that it is a diaper bag... Well, so what? I removed the bottle warmer, the changing sheet and now it's just, my dotted bag! Love the bag! It's suits perfect with my small, dotted suitcase which I use all the time!!
Ik heb iets met rood met witte stippen. Niet in alles maar in sommige dingen. En toen zag ik deze tas en die wilde ik niet hebben. Die moest ik hebben! En toen zag ik dat het een luiertas is... Nou ja, boeien!?! Ik heb de flessenwarmer en het verschoonding eruit gehaald en nu is het gewoon mijn, gestippelde tas! Ik hou ervan! En hij past perfect bij mijn kleine, rood met wit gestippelde koffer, die ik altijd gebruik en bij me heb!!

Feeling happily 'blue'

I think my life was on hold in the last week. Last monday was my dentist appointment and guess what? I'm still alive! And my teeth look amazing! So part one is done, up to part two in January.

Being nervous made me wanna have a crochet job were I could work on, mindless. And it was weird, I have to say. At some points I just crocheted, and crocheted and went into this trance kind of feeling. Weird but it kept my mind away of thinking at the dentist.

My orange project, from a few days ago is the same but I can't get a good picture. So I'll show that one later. This blue wrap is better for the picture. Personnaly I love it! It's a really warm wrap which you can wear as a thick scarf and as a wrap. So a scarf against the cold and a accessoire for inside.

Ik denk dat mijn leven een beetje stilstond de afgelopen week. Want afgelopen maandag was daar dan mijn tandarts afspraak en weet je? Ik leef nog!!! En mijn tanden zien er geweldig uit! Dus deel één is afgerond, op naar deel twee in Januari.

Zo (onbewust) nerveus zijn maakte dat ik graag bezig was met een haakproject waar ik gedachteloos aan kon werken. En dat was best bizar, moet ik zeggen. Op sommige momenten was ik net in een soort van trance, of zo. Heel gek maar het hield mijn gedachten wel weg van de tandarts!

Mijn oranje project van een paar dagen terug is hetzelfde maar ik krijg daar nu geen mooie foto van gemaakt. Dus die laat ik later nog wel zien. Persoonlijk vind ik het hele toffe wraps geworden. Ze zijn superwarm en zowel als dikke sjaal, en als wrap te dragen. Zeg maar, tegen de kou maar ook als modeaccessoire, binnen.

Warm ears

In between new projects and designs, I finished this new design of earwarmers. I think they are pretty funky. A bit retro with a touch of folklore!

I want to make a small changing in the design and hope to add these and some other crochet work in the shop, soon. So maybe some warm ears for you too, this winter!

Tussen nieuwe projecten en ontwerpen door, heb ik dit nieuw ontwerpje van stoere oorwarmers afgemaakt. Ik vind ze wel erg funky geworden. Een beetje retro met een snufje folklore erdoor.

Ik moet nog één klein aanpassinkje maken in het ontwerp en dan hoop ik snel, deze en wat andere haakwerken in de winkel te kunnen zetten. Dus misschien ook wel warme oren voor jou, deze winter!

Orange day

Orange day. Yesterday was my orange day... It started with a new orange crochet project (getting the bleegghh of sewing the blanket together) in orange. Lovely project, I can show you the result this weekend.
Oranje dag. Gister was absoluut mijn oranje dag.. Het begon met een nieuw haak project (ik krijg de bleegghh van de deken die ik aan elkaar aan het zetten ben) in oranje. Leuk, leuk project wat ik je het weekend kan laten zien.


The orange contaminated me, so I wore my orange socks yesterday. With orange socks, a orange project I needed some orange jus so I went to the market to get some oranges to make some juice.
Het oranje heeft me besmet dus ik ben mijn oranje sokken ook maar gaan dragen, gister. Met oranje sokken en een oranje project vond ik dat ik ook wel wat jus d'orange nodig had dus naar de markt gegaan en verse sinasappels gehaald voor wat jus.

And then, coming home.. more orange for me. But in the shape of an 'Honest award', received from Miekk's AND from Tante Hilde!!! How amazing is that! Thank you sooooo much!!

En dan, weer thuis... nog meer oranje voor mij. Maar dan in de vorm van een 'Honest award', ontvangen van Miekk's EN Tante Hilde!! Hoe super is dat! Dank jullie wel! Superlief!

With the award, the assignment to tell 10 things about myself. Just in English.

1) I´m in denial with the fall, and the winter that´s coming. I don´t want to put the heater on yet when I come home. I still want some summer...

2) I notice myself being quit nervous the last days. This monday the first big treatment (I need two) with the dentist stands. Pffff..

3) I was a smoker for a long, long time. I quited a month ago but it's hard and I still smoke, two, three times a day (oke that's not completly quiting but still it's pretty good, it used to be a whole pack a day) but this monday that will be over too. That's the deal with myself. (expensive)Dentist treatment = no more smoking.

4) I'm so happy with myself, and proud that I made the choice to eat biological. Meat, milk, bread, vegtables, whatever is possible. And I'm getting rewarded here too! But you can be rewarded to!!! Save here for fair trade, biological gifts!

5) During my burn out I wasn't able to read anything. And reading is one of my favorite things to do! It's getting better and better! At the moment I'm reading 'The loneliness of the prime numbers' from Paola Giordano, which is a reallly good recommendation.

6) Oke, I just threw a caffee latte over myself now.. Grrrr.. First some cleaning here!

7) And with a burned arm and an empty cup of coffee, my mind is empty too. I´m not making ten, today...

Knitting it together

I'm a good and neat knitter, iff I may say so myself and if I go just straight, I'm pretty fast but I can't compete with my mom. She's super fast! So I asked her if she would help me with a new project that's in my head. A 100% wool, knitted blanket made out of three strips. So three long pieces which I can sew togheter to finish it to a blanket. And my super sweet mom helped me, and so I have now three knitted stripes with orange, blue, purple and grey to put together.
I already thried three different ways of attachting but none of them is working for me. So I'm working on this project, trying all kinds of techniques and have to say, I'm really really curious how it will work out, in the end!



Ik ben een goede en nette breister, als ik het zelf mag zeggen en als ik gewoon recht brei, dan ben ik ook best snel. Maar ik kan niet tegen mijn moeder op! Zij is echt supersnel! Dus had ik gevraagd of ze me wilde helpen bij een nieuw brei project, wat in mijn hoofd zit. Een 100% wollen, gebreide deken bestaande uit drie delen. Dus drie lange stroken die ik later aan elkaar kan zetten om er een deken van te maken. En mijn super lieve moeder wilde me helpen dus nu heb ik drie stukken in oranje, blauw, paars en grijs en kan ik ze samenvoegen.
Ik heb al drie verschillende manieren geprobeerd maar geen eentje werkt er lekker of mooi. Dus ik ben nog hard van alles aan het uitvogelen, nieuwe technieken aan het proberen en ik moet zeggen, dat ik inmiddels zelf supernieuwsgierig ben hoe dit project er uiteindelijk uit komt te zien.

Colorbomb!

I started a new project with, yeah of course, lots of colors! These squares are really tiny so it's a real colorbomb! Love to work on this project and soon you'll see the whole picture.

Ik ben een nieuw project begonnen met, ja hoe kan het ook anders, veel kleuren! Deze vierkantjes zijn echt heel klein dus het is een ware kleurexplosie! Het is een erg leuk project en snel zal ik je het hele resultaat laten zien.
En iets anders.. Wil je mijn Bowie zien, kijk dan even op Cotton and Cloud. Ook voor super leuke en mooie haak en/of naai pakketjes!!

Bio-industry: Live fast, die young!

In the last months I reflected a lot!! Really a lot. Reflections towards myself, towards the relations I have but also towards my consuming behavior.
What do I eat, what do I wear, what is my contribution to the environment. That kind of questions. And on a lot of points I’m doing good, like most of you. I separate my paper, remove chargers from the outlet if something is charged and I turn of the heater an hour before going to sleep. But then… If I’m at the supermarket and I see one lbs of minced meat for 2 euro or biological minced meat for 5 euro, I’ll take the cheap one. Until I started to think about it. What’s wrong in this picture?

As a teacher on a school for social work, we have a lot of students who are vegetarian and often I received the offer to watch a movie on the bio-industry. And to be honest, I didn’t want to see it. Told them and I avoided this subject. Until I stood before the meat section in the supermarket, choose the cheap meat and went home with the feeling that something was wrong. So I watched a film on the bio-industry. In my case, one about meat chickens… And I don’t know what happened. Never, really never I cried so hard. Really, the pain came out of my toes. And all I could say and scream is, this is wrong, this can’t be going on and I can’t eat this. And how is it possible that I closed my eyes for this? I only saw this film and didn’t need to see another one.

I made the choice to never buy ‘regular’ meat anymore. If I eat with others, I eat what served but in my home, no more! And indeed, biological meat as also other biological or fair trade products are more expensive but I think it’s bullshit to say that we (or I) can’t afford it. For months now I’m buying fair trade products like coffee and sugar, or biological bread and milk, and really it is to do. Because, were are you paying for? That 2 euro meat is indeed cheaper for your wallet but what does is cost our world?

We need to make a change. And we consumers are the ones who have the choice. En because of that choice we decide what happens and that’s something we have to realize. Because the market is all about demand and supply. And if there is more demand for biological meat (or other ‘good’ products), there will be more supply and less bio-meat. And the same for other products. And let me be honest to you, I’m no saint and I have a lot to learn. With this post I don’t expect you to eat biological meat this evening and I don’t think you are stupid if you continue to eat bio-industry meat. What I do hope is that you, like me, start to think and reflect. What do you eat? How is your consuming behavior? And which choices are you going to make?

In de laatste maanden heb ik veel gereflecteerd!! Heel erg veel. Reflecties naar mezelf, naar de relaties die ik met anderen heb maar ook reflecties naar mijn consumptie gedrag. Wat eet ik nou eigenlijk, wat draag ik, doe ik voor het milieu, dat soort vragen. En op heel veel punten doe ik het best goed, zoals de meesten. Ik breng mijn papier netjes weg, haal opladers uit het stopcontact als iets is opgeladen, doe de kachel al een uur voor het slapen gaan uit, dat soort dingen. Maar dan.. Als ik in de supermarkt ben en ik zie een halve kilo gehakt voor 2 euro of biologisch gehakt voor 5 euro, ja dan neem ik die van 2 euro. Tot ik erover ging nadenken. Wat klopt hier niet?

Als docent aan een opleiding voor Zorg en Welzijn heb ik veel te maken met leerlingen die vegetarisch zijn en vaak, vaak heb ik het aanbod gehad om een filmpje te kijken over de bio-industrie. En eerlijk is eerlijk, ik wilde het niet. Zei dat ook en heb dit onderwerp altijd vermeden. Tot ik telkens bij het vlees stond, het 2 euro gehakt koos en naar huis ging met het gevoel, dat dit niet klopte. En toen ben ik toch een filmpje gaan kijken over de bio-industrie. Een filmpje over vleeskippen.. Ik weet niet wat er met me gebeurde. Nog nooit, maar dan ook echt nooit heb ik zo hard moeten huilen. Echt, het verdriet kwam uit mijn tenen. Ik kon alleen maar roepen, dit kan niet, dit mag niet en ik mag dit niet eten. Hoe kan het dat ik dit jarenlang wel heb gedaan, dat ik mijn ogen sloot!? Ik heb alleen dit filmpje gekeken en ik hoef er niet meer te zien.

Ik heb de keuze gemaakt zelf nooit meer ‘gewoon’ vlees te kopen. Als ik bij anderen eet dan ga ik echt geen eisen stellen of moeilijk doen maar zelf koop ik niks anders meer. En ja, biologisch vlees maar ook andere biologische of fair trade producten zijn duurder maar ik vind het een bullshit argument om te zeggen dat we (of ik) dat niet kan betalen. Zelf koop ik al maanden fair trade producten zoals koffie en suiker maar ook biologisch brood en melk en echt hoor, het is prima te doen. Want weet je, het zijn de prioriteiten die we stellen. Want waar betaal je voor? Dat gehakt van 2 euro is inderdaad goedkoper voor jou portemonnee maar wat kost het de wereld?

We moeten iets doen aan onze consumptiemaatschappij. En als consument zijn wij degene die de keus hebben en daarmee bepalen wat er gebeurt, dat moeten we ons realiseren! Want de markt is gewoon een kwestie van vraag en aanbod. Hoe meer vraag naar biologisch vlees, hoe groter het aanbod en minder bio-vlees. En hetzelfde voor alle andere producten. En laat ik heel eerlijk is, ik ben geen heilige en ik heb ook nog veel te leren. Met dit bericht verwacht ik niet dat je vanavond meteen biologisch vlees eet en ik vind je geen stommerd als je door blijft gaan met het eten van bio vlees. Wat ik wel hoop, is dat je ook begint met nadenken en reflecteren. Want wat eet jij? Hoe zit jou consumptiegedrag in elkaar? Welke keuzes maak jij?

Mom's 'Dikkie Dik' embroidery work

My sister and brother-in-law are having their first child in December. My mom is a great embroiderer and made a 'Dikkie Dik' alfabet for the nursery. So much work, so much counting, so much treads. It's beautiful!
Mijn zus en zwager verwachten, in December, hun eerste kindje. Mijn moeder is een geweldige, geduldige borduurster en heeft een Dikkie Dik alfabet gebordeerd voor de kinderkamer. Zoveel werk, zoveel getel, zoveel draden. En echt geweldig mooi geworden!

'Cappuccino' tablecloth

Here's another finished project! Either it would be an neckaccessoire or a tablecloth, and I choose the last one! Because of the colorcombination ('cappuccino' as someone responded a few weeks back which I think is a great name! so thanks!) , and because of this shape I had in mind. And because of the challenge I saw in making a tablecloth. These things, I always find very old fashioned. And I do think this one is funky, a bit retro but still very modern.
(ohh, I did tried an edge but that's too much and I'll keep it plain)

Hier is een ander afgerond project! En, of het werd een nekaccessoire of een tafelkleedje, en ik heb voor de laatste gekozen! Vanwege de kleurcombinatie ('cappucinno' zoals iemand een paar weken terug reageerd, wat ik een top naam vind! dus bedankt!), en vanwege de vorm, die in mijn hoofd zat. En omdat ik wel een uitdaging zag in het maken van een 'kleedje'. Ik vind die dingen namelijk zo ouderwets terwijl ik geloof dat ze wel heel tof kunnen zijn. En ik denk wel dat deze vrij hip, een beetje retro maar toch ook erg van 'nu' is.
(ohh, en ik heb wel geprobeerd om er een randje omheen te maken maar dat was het niet)

And the finished result! Indeed slippers and not a dragontail. But I love that idea! Pattern from Gabriela. You have to try! Really easy to make and a nice short project. And I think it's a nice gift!
En het eindresultaat! Inderdaad sloffen met een puntje en geen drakenstaart, Janina. Al vond ik dat ook een erg goed idee! Patroon is van Gabriela. Echt, probeer het eens! Super makkelijk om te maken en een fijn, klein projectje. En ik vind ze echt leuk om cadeau te geven!
